"Fighting with Fruit: Resisting Slavery and Racism in Still-Life Painting" by Shana Klein
Although still-life paintings brimming with fruit presented an optimistic portrait of the nation after the American Civil War, pictures of food were not always so pleasant or neutral. Lecturer Shana Klein investigates food in American art before and after the Civil War to understand how artists—specifically African American artists—used food in art to combat racism and resist the institution of slavery.

This talk is presented in conjunction with the Allen's installation "How can Museum Labels be Antiracist" by Assistant Curator of European and American Art Alexandra Letvin.

Klein's talk will discuss works from the Allen's collection including "Still Life with Fruit" by Severin Roesen and "Still Life" by Jan Davidsz de Heem. An audience Q&A moderated by Alexandra Letvin will follow the presentation.

Shana Klein
Assistant Professor of Art History @Kent State University
Shana Klein is a historian of American art. She holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of New Mexico, where she completed the dissertation—and now book—“The Fruits of Empire: Art, Food, and the Politics of Race in the Age of American Expansion.” This book investigates fruit in paintings, photographs, advertisements, and cookbooks to understand how representations of food pressed upon the nation's most heated debates over race and citizenship. Klein has been awarded several fellowships for this research at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, U.S. Capitol Building, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, among others. She has published research in journals such as "American Art," "Public Art Dialogue," and "Southern Cultures." Klein’s research interests include American visual and material culture, food studies, race and post-colonial studies, and art and social justice.
